John Schneider Opens Up on George Springer’s Possible Final Game With the Blue Jays
The Toronto Blue Jays closed out the 2026 MLB regular season with a 5-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, but the game carried an emotional significance for veteran outfielder and designated hitter George Springer.
With Springer potentially playing his final game at Rogers Centre as a member of the Blue Jays, manager John Schneider made sure the veteran had an opportunity to receive the appreciation of the Toronto crowd.
Springer led off the bottom of the third inning with a double before Schneider replaced him with a pinch-runner, giving the 37-year-old a chance to take in the moment and acknowledge the fans.
“I think the world of George Springer, player, person,” Schneider said after the game. “I wanted to make sure he had a moment with the fans because he had so many huge moments here with us.”
The situation comes as Springer approaches an uncertain offseason. He signed a six-year, $150 million contract with Toronto before the 2021 season, but that deal has now expired, making him a free agent this winter.
There is also a possibility that Springer could retire after an injury-plagued period of his career.
Springer finished the 2026 season with 15 home runs, 54 RBIs and a .726 OPS over 126 games. By fWAR, it was his least productive season in the major leagues.
However, his recent career has included a significant resurgence. After producing 2.8 fWAR combined in 2023 and 2024, Springer bounced back in 2025 during Toronto’s memorable season, hitting 32 home runs with 84 RBIs and a .959 OPS.
During his six seasons with the Blue Jays, Springer helped Toronto reach the postseason three times. The team came within two outs of winning the 2025 World Series before losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in an extra-inning Game 7.
Whether Sunday marked Springer’s final appearance in a Blue Jays uniform remains uncertain. If he decides to continue his playing career, his experience and track record could make him an intriguing option for teams looking for a veteran presence.
For now, Schneider made sure one of Toronto’s most important players of the past six seasons received the recognition he deserved from the home crowd.
