Caleb Williams Suffers Major Injury Setback After Scream Silences Stadium

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has suffered a significant setback in his recovery after his hamstring injury was upgraded from a Grade 1 strain to a Grade 2 injury.

Williams initially suffered the injury during the Bears’ 3–9 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. The quarterback went down without contact while scrambling toward the end zone on a rain-soaked field, clutching his right hamstring and screaming in pain.

The incident left Soldier Field largely silent as Williams was helped off the field before being taken to the locker room on a cart.

Initial reports suggested Williams had suffered a Grade 1 hamstring strain, but a subsequent report from ESPN indicated that the injury is actually Grade 2. That classification could keep the Bears quarterback sidelined for around three to four weeks.

The Bears have already confirmed that Williams will miss their Week 3 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. The team has provided limited details about the injury, maintaining a cautious approach regarding his recovery timeline.

Head coach Ben Johnson has declined to place a specific timetable on Williams’ return, saying the quarterback has previously recovered faster than expected and will approach his rehabilitation with determination.

“I’m not putting a timeline on this. We’re going to say week-to-week,” Johnson said.

Williams’ absence creates additional uncertainty for Chicago’s quarterback situation. Backup Tyson Bagent is also dealing with a concussion and remained in the NFL’s concussion protocol heading into Saturday.

Veteran quarterback Case Keenum could therefore be in contention to make his first NFL start since the 2023 season, when he played for the Houston Texans.

The Bears face a challenging stretch of games, including matchups with the Eagles and New York Jets, followed by a rivalry meeting with the Green Bay Packers on October 11.

With Williams potentially sidelined for close to a month, Chicago will now have to manage a difficult period without its starting quarterback while monitoring his recovery closely.
