Tuchel Explains Why He Started Myles Lewis-Skelly for England and Praises His Performance
Myles Lewis-Skelly has earned praise for his performance in England’s recent clash with Spain, with manager Thomas Tuchel suggesting that the Arsenal youngster is now playing in a position that suits him best.
Lewis-Skelly made his first appearance for England in almost a year when he was handed a starting role in midfield against Spain at Wembley Stadium.
Speaking after the match, Tuchel explained that Lewis-Skelly’s improved form at club level played a major role in his decision to include the 20-year-old in England’s starting lineup.
“His improving form is why he made an impression in club football and now through the week, that’s why he got his start,” Tuchel said.
The England manager also highlighted Lewis-Skelly’s performances in midfield for Arsenal, suggesting the position could be better suited to the youngster than his previous role at left-back.
“He did very well for Arsenal in this position. I think it suits him a bit better than left-back,” Tuchel said.
Tuchel was also pleased with the youngster’s overall display against Spain.
“He was just very good and had a good match today. Did everything that was needed. Good performance,” he added.
Lewis-Skelly’s performance also attracted praise from former England strikers Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker.
Shearer highlighted the youngster’s rapid development and his transition into Arsenal and England’s midfield, while Lineker praised him for handling the responsibility of playing in midfield against Spain.
Lewis-Skelly has played in midfield since his youth days, although Arsenal initially used him primarily at left-back when he broke into the first team. He adapted to the defensive role and became an important option for the club.
With Arsenal now having greater depth on the left side, Lewis-Skelly has been able to return to midfield. He has started five matches in the position for Arsenal during the 2026/27 season, with the team winning all five games.
Attention now turns back to England, who are set to face the Czech Republic away from home on Tuesday night. If Tuchel gives Lewis-Skelly another starting opportunity, the Arsenal midfielder will have another chance to build on his impressive return to the international setup.
