The Alabama Crimson Tide’s outlook for the 2026 college football season hinges entirely on how quickly Keelon Russell can grow into the starting quarterback role. During the Mullet A-Day showcase at Bryant-Denny Stadium, Russell looked like a future star but was that real progress, or just a symptom of a slipping defensive standard and a broader decline from the traditional “Bama Standard”?
According to CBS Sports’ Brad Crawford, Alabama could struggle with at least five SEC opponents Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and LSU potentially tumbling to a disastrous 7–5 record that would almost certainly spell the end for Kalen DeBoer. So maybe that A-Day shine wasn’t as promising as it appeared.
Even Vanderbilt, long considered the SEC’s bottom-feeder, earned a mention from Crawford. The Commodores have split their last two meetings with Alabama, and with Jared Curtis, the top QB in the 2026 recruiting class, set to start at FirstBank Stadium, the Tide’s trip to Nashville suddenly doesn’t look like a gimme especially since Alabama lost its last game in the Music City.
Crawford wrote, “Alabama’s not going to lose at home to Florida State not with the Seminoles’ current offensive concerns. But the SEC schedule is far less forgiving. South Carolina has nearly knocked off the Tide in back-to-back years, and matchups with Georgia, Tennessee, Texas A&M, LSU, and Auburn are anything but certain. Even the road trip to Vanderbilt belongs in that category.”

The fact that Alex Golesh’s Tigers are being given a legitimate chance to come into Tuscaloosa and steal the Iron Bowl speaks volumes about Alabama’s precarious situation heading into the fall. Auburn hasn’t won an Iron Bowl on the road since the legendary 2010 “Cam-back.”
It’s reasonable to expect trouble from CFP-caliber programs like Georgia and A&M, or from hostile road environments like Knoxville and Baton Rouge. But needing to worry about Auburn inside Bryant-Denny Stadium?
There are only so many ways to say it: this Alabama team looks cooked before the season has even begun.
