On Tuesday morning, the Philadelphia Phillies made a bold move by firing manager Rob Thomson following a disappointing 9–19 start that left the team at the bottom of the standings.
Taking over as interim manager is Don Mattingly, who previously served as a coach for the Toronto Blue Jays, a legendary player for the New York Yankees, and the manager of the Miami Marlins.

As noted by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Phillies’ choice to appoint Mattingly has resulted in an MLB first: a father-son duo serving simultaneously as a team’s general manager and manager.

While the circumstances that brought the Phillies to this point are far from ideal, the historical aspect of having their interim manager and current GM as father and son is an intriguing subplot.
Just as LeBron James and Bronny James are sharing the court in the NBA, Preston and Don Mattingly are joining forces as two key leaders within the Phillies organization.
Firing Thomson wasn’t a major shock given the team’s poor performance, and turning to the experienced Don Mattingly is hardly a surprise either.
This isn’t where the Phillies hoped to be after 28 games, but from a storytelling perspective, this slice of MLB history offers a fascinating and fun twist.
