Despite suffering a 9–8 defeat to the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night, which marked the Philadelphia Phillies’ ninth straight loss, Kyle Schwarber found a noteworthy reason for optimism.
Schwarber is currently in his 12th major league season and his fifth with the Phillies, established as one of the league’s premier power hitters, particularly in terms of home runs.
Even so, Philadelphia has stumbled badly out of the gate this year, extending their losing streak to nine games with the loss to Chicago. After the game, Schwarber reflected on the team’s difficulties while pointing to one encouraging aspect of their latest performance, as reported by ESPN.
“I feel like that’s probably our brand of baseball right there,” the Phillies’ slugger said. “That’s the way that we should keep playing, right? Guys are going to be grinding, and guys are figuring it out. But we felt like we kept energy today. We kept fighting through it.”
“I feel like that’s a big one for us,” Schwarber added, looking ahead to the upcoming series against Atlanta. “A lot of different people today, and that’s what we’re going to need to have. Keep fighting, keep finding that momentum. And when guys are going to get their names called on, they’re going to be ready.”

Philadelphia stayed competitive with Chicago throughout the game, which stretched into extra innings. The score was tied at seven until Dansby Swanson delivered a walk-off single to seal the win for the Cubs.
The loss dropped the Phillies to 8–17, leaving them at the bottom of the NL East standings, trailing both the New York Mets and the Washington Nationals.
Having dropped nine consecutive games, the Phillies will aim to get back in the win column during their next series. They remain on the road to face the Braves, with Game 1 scheduled for April 25 at 7:15 p.m. ET.
