Wake Forest has landed its third transfer portal addition with the commitment of Jamari McDowell, a guard from the Kansas Jayhawks. McDowell, a 6-foot-5 redshirt sophomore, averaged 3.3 points and 1.1 assists in 17 minutes per game this season. After missing the 2024–25 campaign due to injury, he returned as Kansas’ sixth man, appearing in all 35 games. Though not a major scorer, he proved to be a reliable perimeter threat, knocking down 35% of his 3-point attempts (30-of-86). His top performance came against #1 Arizona, when he posted 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals in Kansas’ upset win.
A former 4-star prospect ranked No. 77 in the 2023 class, McDowell originally chose Kansas over Wake Forest, Texas A&M, and Xavier in 2022. His previous connection with the Wake Forest coaching staff likely influenced his decision to transfer.
Reports highlight McDowell’s defensive intensity and nonstop effort, traits that help offset his modest offensive production. Wake Forest hopes he can become the kind of on-ball stopper who prevents opposing stars from torching the Deacs. If he maintains his defensive presence and continues shooting 35% or better from three, he could play a significant role for Wake next season.
