Amid a roster reshaped by transfers and only a few remaining players from the Hugh Freeze era, true freshman DeShawn Spencer has quickly stood out as one of Auburn’s most impressive performers in spring practice. According to AL.com’s Peter Rauterkus, the former Saraland standout ranks among five Tigers who have significantly boosted their stock this offseason.
While expectations remain measured, Spencer appears to be on track to become a key option for USF transfer quarterback Byrum Brown within the offense brought over from Tampa by Joel Gordon and head coach Alex Golesh. He has also drawn attention for his work on special teams, particularly as a punt returner, where his speed could carve out an additional role.
Rauterkus noted that although Spencer was one of three freshman wide receivers signed by Auburn, he may be the most likely to see early playing time. The Alabama native made a strong impression early in spring drills, earning first-team reps despite stiff competition in the receiver room. His versatility and explosiveness have also landed him opportunities in the return game. While early spring standouts don’t always translate into immediate fall impact, Spencer’s rapid progress is an encouraging sign for Auburn’s receiving corps.
In a short span, Spencer has gained recognition for how quickly he has adjusted to the college level. His next opportunity to showcase that growth could come during Saturday’s A-Day spring game, the first under Golesh’s leadership.
Spencer’s path to Auburn came together quickly. Initially committed to Duke under Manny Diaz, he flipped to the Tigers just two days after Golesh’s hiring and one day before early signing day, becoming one of the new coach’s first major recruiting wins.
Now, attention turns to how soon that decision will pay off. While he may have had a clearer path to immediate playing time at Duke, earning a starting role at Auburn especially as part of a potential resurgence on the Plains would make the move even more rewarding.
