Is it time for the Philadelphia Phillies to make a change at third base?
Although the Philadelphia Phillies have found a bit of a momentum shift after dismissing Rob Thomson, they still have a significant distance to cover before reaching their goals.
Following a disastrous start to the season, the Phillies made the justified decision at the time to move on from their manager in an effort to inject some energy into the club. So far, that strategy has paid off, with the team performing noticeably better.
It wasn’t long ago that Thomson himself was brought in to provide a similar spark in 2022, and now the organization is optimistic that Don Mattingly can replicate the success achieved a few years earlier.
While Thomson’s firing served as a wake-up call, the roster still has deeper issues. Although the starting rotation ranks among the league’s best when healthy, the lineup has been the primary source of struggle.
Philadelphia sought to upgrade the offense over the winter but failed to make a significant impact. One position long rumored to be on their radar for an upgrade is third base. Given Alec Bohm’s early-season struggles, a change seems imminent.
Third Base Needs a Change
Third base has been flagged as an area in need of attention since last year, but now the moment for action has truly arrived. This season, Bohm has been floundering at the plate. Across 31 games, he has posted a slash line of .161/.230/.214, with just one home run and 14 RBIs.
The former All-Star has hit a new low, and his poor performance is taking a toll on the lineup. Bohm was once a middle-of-the-order run producer for the Phillies, but those days feel distant, and a change is overdue.
Edmundo Sosa has begun seeing more playing time at third base, but he is better suited as a valuable utility player rather than an everyday starter. Meanwhile, one of the team’s top prospects, Aidan Miller, is injured, with no clear timeline for his return.
With internal options far from ideal, the Phillies will likely need to look outside the organization to truly address the position. Hopefully, Bohm can turn things around soon, but the team cannot wait much longer—a move is necessary.
