Mark Pope and Kentucky net a crucial commitment in the form of transfer star Alex Wilkins.
Kentucky fans can finally breathe again the latest stretch of anxious waiting is over. Just days after securing a major commitment from Zoom Diallo, Mark Pope and the Wildcats have now added his backcourt partner, landing transfer standout Alex Wilkins, according to Joe Tipton.
Wilkins is expected to slot in at shooting guard and arrives after a breakout season with Furman, where he turned heads across the country with his scoring ability. He averaged 18 points per game while shooting 46% from the field, making him one of the more sought-after guards in the transfer portal this offseason.
Despite strong interest from Alabama, Kentucky ultimately won the battle for Wilkins. He now joins Diallo to form what could become one of the SEC’s most dangerous backcourts. Together, they give Pope a strong foundation as he continues shaping the roster for the 2026–27 season.
This isn’t the first time Kentucky has come out on top in a recruiting showdown with Alabama. The Wildcats previously edged out Nate Oats and the Crimson Tide for Jasper Johnson, and they’ve done it again here with Wilkins.
While it’s not entirely clear what sealed the deal for Wilkins, his addition brings plenty of excitement to Lexington. Beyond his scoring, he showcased his all-around game by averaging nearly five assists and about a steal per game. He also proved he could perform on the big stage, dropping 21 points against UConn in the opening round of this year’s NCAA Tournament.
What makes Wilkins even more appealing is his upside he’s only entering his sophomore season, meaning there’s still plenty of room for growth. Kentucky is essentially getting a high-impact player early in his development.
With the backcourt now bolstered by two major additions, Pope can shift his focus toward strengthening the frontcourt. More importantly, these moves address one of the Wildcats’ biggest weaknesses from last season.
Now, Kentucky has a backcourt built to score and do so consistently. Diallo and Wilkins are just the beginning of what’s shaping up to be a promising third year under Pope.
