As the Philadelphia Phillies search for some early-season momentum, one major question still hangs over them.
Their start has been inconsistent flashes of strong play mixed with some clear shortcomings. Expectations for this roster are sky-high, so their performance so far may feel underwhelming, though there’s still plenty of season left. Much of Philadelphia’s identity comes from its starting rotation, and that group is still missing its anchor, Zack Wheeler. He continues to work his way back in the minors, and the club remains hopeful he’ll rejoin them soon. Even so, the rotation has managed to hold up thanks to the depth already on hand.
The bullpen has also stepped up as an unexpected bright spot, with several relievers performing well most notably Jhoan Duran. But while the pitching staff overall has been solid, the offense has struggled to find consistency. Their opener against the Chicago Cubs was their strongest offensive showing of the year, yet broader concerns remain.
Third base, in particular, is becoming hard to overlook. Alec Bohm’s early struggles have created a real problem, and the Phillies do have an alternative.
Edmundo Sosa Deserves More Opportunities
Given Bohm’s issues, turning to Edmundo Sosa more often may be the smarter play. Through 15 games, Bohm is hitting just .155/.231/.224 with a single home run and 10 RBI the run production is there, but the overall output is well below acceptable levels.
The Phillies have shown some willingness to explore a switch, and increasing Sosa’s playing time is a logical next step. Last season, he posted a .276/.307/.469 slash line with 11 homers across 89 games and finished with a higher OPS than Bohm. On Tuesday, Sosa launched a three-run homer while starting at third, which could help him secure more regular at-bats.
Bohm’s performance has been a drag on the offense, and while Sosa isn’t a superstar, he may be exactly what Philadelphia needs at the hot corner right now.
