BREAKING NEWS: Ex-Auburn blue-chip Amaris Williams’ injury will test the Kirby Smart Georgia football machine

Amaris Williams will not take the field for the Georgia Bulldogs in the 2026 college football season. The former five-star EDGE prospect from the 2024 class, who originally committed to the Auburn Tigers out of Clinton, North Carolina, suffered a season-ending injury late in spring practice on Wednesday.

According to Dawgs Central’s Graham Coffey, Georgia’s defense received a major setback as one of its top transfer additions will miss the entire season. Multiple sources confirmed that Williams tore his ACL during Tuesday’s practice while working on a pass-rush move in a non-contact drill. His knee gave out late in the session, and medical evaluations later confirmed the injury. With a recovery timeline of 9–12 months, Williams is expected to be sidelined for all of 2026.

This is a significant blow for Georgia, which was counting on Williams to elevate its pass rush in his second SEC season. With no spring transfer window available to bring in reinforcements, the coaching staff led by Kirby Smart, Tray Scott, and Glenn Schumann will need to accelerate the development of players like Chase Linton, who has already impressed this spring, along with other under-the-radar edge defenders.

Fortunately for Georgia, Smart’s program is built on depth. Despite operating in an era of heavy NIL spending, he has consistently developed talent across the roster and produced NFL-ready defenders in large numbers. That depth will now be tested as the Bulldogs look to fill the void.

The EDGE/outside linebacker position has been a major emphasis in Georgia’s defensive scheme, particularly within Schumann’s hybrid 4-3/3-4 system that values versatility. Williams possessed the physical tools to make a major impact against both the run and pass, but his breakout will now have to wait until 2027 as Georgia searches for a capable replacement on the edge.
