The Kentucky basketball program missed out on landing Tyran Stokes this past Tuesday, as the five-star prospect chose Kansas over the Wildcats. The failed recruitment was a humiliating setback for Mark Pope and his staff, who were completely out of touch while chasing a recruit they had little chance of landing.

To make matters worse, the coaching staff committed a rules violation on the very day of Stokes’ commitment an unflattering moment for the program.
Who is Tyran Stokes?

The five-star forward is the top-ranked high school basketball recruit in the nation. He currently plays for Rainier High School in Seattle, Washington, where he excelled as a senior. His senior season followed a surprising transfer from Notre Dame, which came just before his final year. Stokes mysteriously left Notre Dame days ahead of the 2025 season, reportedly due to disciplinary issues. The move, however, didn’t hurt his performance: he scored 31 points in his debut for the Vikings, and two months later dropped 63 points in a game against West Seattle.
Given his elite production, Stokes’ recruitment drew national attention. He held offers from nearly every major college program, ultimately narrowing his decision to Kentucky and Kansas. He announced his choice live on national television Tuesday, picking the Jayhawks. Kentucky basketball came up empty.
Mark Pope and his staff believed they had a real chance to land Stokes, pulling out all the stops and fueling hope among the fanbase but they were disconnected from reality.
