AUBURN, Ala. (WBRC) Alabama’s victory over Auburn on Saturday meant far more than just bragging rights for head coach Patrick Murphy. The longtime leader of the Crimson Tide program reached a historic milestone, becoming the first coach in SEC softball history to record 500 conference wins an achievement he says he deeply appreciates.
Murphy, who has been part of Alabama Softball since its inception in 1999, reflected on what the moment means to him.
“This is the 30th year of Alabama softball, and what makes it so special is that I’ve been here from the very beginning,” he said. “Two years as an assistant, 28 as head coach. I know every single young woman who has worn this uniform their families, their careers, everything. It’s one of the greatest blessings of my life.”
Over nearly three decades in Tuscaloosa, Murphy has guided the Crimson Tide to 13 Women’s College World Series appearances, starting with their first trip in 2000. He also led Alabama to its first National Championship in 2012. Under his leadership, the program has claimed six SEC regular season titles, five SEC tournament championships, and Murphy himself has earned SEC Coach of the Year honors five times.

Saturday’s 4–0 shutout sealed the series against Auburn and marked Alabama’s 17th shutout of the season. Through the first two games, the Tide have outscored the Tigers 5–0, showcasing dominant pitching and defense.
The rivals will close out the series Sunday at 1 p.m. at Jane B. Moore Field.
