Speaking to the media, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said he let Thomson go to inject new energy into the clubhouse. He described their conversation as warm and praised Thomson as a wonderful, hardworking person who contributed greatly to the organization. Dombrowski mentioned that owner John Middleton told Thomson he’s always welcome back, and he expects Thomson to receive a standing ovation from fans in the future. However, Dombrowski felt the team needed a different voice and direction, adding that Thomson himself admitted he didn’t understand why the team was struggling. While Thomson was the right voice a few years ago, Dombrowski believes the current roster requires a different approach.

Don Mattingly now takes over as interim manager, marking his third MLB managerial stint after leading the Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins. His regular-season record stands at 889–950 (.493), and he is 10–14 (.417) in the postseason. Last year, as bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays, he helped the team reach Game 7 of the World Series before losing to the Dodgers. If Mattingly can lift the Phillies out of last place and into playoff contention, he’ll be a strong candidate for the permanent job next season.
