BREAKING NEWS: Auburn’s Byrum Brown faces a big question for 2027.

Byrum Brown, the Auburn Tigers transfer, has the potential to become the first quarterback drafted directly from Auburn since Jarrett Stidham in 2019 when the 2027 NFL draft rolls around next April. However, a key question already lingers regarding his pro future: can Brown’s throwing mechanics succeed at the NFL level?

Auburn's Byrum Brown already has obvious negative talking point for the 2027 NFL draft

In a recent piece, AL.com’s Peter Rauterkus listed Brown as one of five Auburn players who could be selected in the 2027 draft, but he also raised the obvious concern that has been a hot topic since spring practices began and only intensified after Brown’s struggles in the A-Day spring game.

“Brown is the biggest name on Auburn’s 2026 roster, but he’s a complicated NFL prospect. Having thrown for 7,690 yards and rushed for another 2,265, he’s proven himself as an impressive college player,” Rauterkus wrote. He noted that the step up in competition at Auburn will test Brown this season, though his production is hard to dispute. What is up for debate is whether Brown can replicate that effectiveness in the pros. “He brings good size and has proved himself to be a solid passer, but his throwing mechanics are unconventional. If Brown has another good season in 2026 and works his way up draft boards, those mechanics could be a major talking point going into the 2027 draft.”

What is Byrum Brown’s ceiling in the 2027 NFL draft?

Even though Brown’s mechanics will be a favorite target for Auburn critics throughout the 2026 season, if his approach works against SEC defenses, NFL teams will likely feel comfortable drafting him and ironing out those mechanical flaws later.

Brown’s physical tools are, frankly, undeniable. At 6’3″ and over 230 pounds, he has an NFL-ready build. Of course, proving he possesses the necessary instincts in Power 4 conference play this coming season will determine how much patience NFL franchises are willing to invest in his development.

Brown arguably showed enough during his time with the USF Bulls to warrant draft consideration even if a freak injury wiped out his 2026 season. But if things click for Brown in east-central Alabama, we could easily be talking about a Day 2 pick and possibly even a late first-round selection.
