Phillies’ Rob Thomson Facing Kyle Schwarber Decision After Roster News

The Philadelphia Phillies have stumbled out of the gate in the 2026 MLB season, entering Saturday at 8–11 and trying to halt a three-game skid. A major culprit has been their underperforming outfield — aside from Brandon Marsh, the group has offered almost nothing at the plate. Rookie Justin Crawford has had a few bright moments, but offseason addition Adolis García, signed for one year at $10 million, has been disappointing. Otto Kemp, who recently earned more at-bats, has also struggled near the bottom of the order. With the outfield contributing little on offense or defense, Philadelphia opted for a roster shakeup in hopes of generating a spark.

Before Saturday’s matchup with the Atlanta Braves, the Phillies promoted outfielder Felix Reyes from Triple-A. The move adds another bat, but it also complicates their defensive picture. Though Reyes can play the outfield, he isn’t regarded as a dependable fielder. Manager Rob Thomson even admitted that Reyes “needs reps” defensively, via Tim Kelly of On Pattison. With Crawford the only trustworthy glove, bringing in another unpolished defender further strains an already unstable outfield alignment.

Reyes is being called up for one primary reason his bat. He forced the issue in Triple-A by hitting .333 with a .345 OBP and 1.000 OPS across 18 games. To maximize his offense, the Phillies may need to rethink their defensive setup. One possibility is occasionally moving Kyle Schwarber back to left field, allowing Reyes to focus on hitting without being exposed defensively.

Schwarber re-signed with Philadelphia over the winter on a five-year, $150 million deal after finishing second in NL MVP voting in 2025. He has begun to heat up again, with three homers and six RBI in his last six games. He also has prior experience in left field, making eight appearances there last season. While he’s not a strong defender, he’s at least familiar with the spot  an important factor if Reyes struggles.

For now, Schwarber remains the designated hitter for Saturday’s game against Atlanta, while Reyes gets the start in left. But if the defensive concerns grow, or if Reyes’ bat becomes too valuable to sit, Thomson may have to consider swapping their roles. The Phillies desperately need solutions in the outfield, and Reyes’ promotion is their latest attempt to find one.
