The Atlanta Braves have brought back a familiar depth piece, re-signing utility outfielder and third baseman Luke Williams, who has been part of the organization since 2023.

According to Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors, Williams returned to the NL East club after clearing waivers and choosing free agency, ultimately reaching a new deal with Atlanta. McDonald noted that the move comes as no surprise, explaining that the Braves value Williams as a versatile depth option even though his lack of minor-league options has led to him being shuffled on and off the roster frequently.

Williams was designated for assignment last week when Michael Harris II was activated from the paternity list. While the 29-year-old isn’t known for his bat, he does bring speed and smart baserunning to the table, having stolen 25 bases in 31 career attempts a notable strength for a bench utility player.

Originally breaking into the Majors in 2021 with the Philadelphia Phillies, Williams posted a career-high .631 OPS across 58 games. Since then, he’s had brief spells with the Miami Marlins, San Francisco Giants, and Los Angeles Dodgers, carving out a niche as a flexible defender who can handle multiple positions.

McDonald added that if any injuries arise on Atlanta’s active roster, Williams will likely be among the first candidates to be called back up further underscoring his ongoing role as a trusted, ready-to-go depth piece for the Braves.
