“After 20 Years of Transformative Leadership, Tom Holmoe Announces Retirement as BYU’s ‘Irreplaceable’ Athletic Director”
For the first time in two decades, BYU will embark on a search for a new athletic director, as Tom Holmoe, who reshaped the Cougars’ athletic landscape, plans to retire at the end of the 2024-25 season. Holmoe’s leadership saw BYU’s historic move to the Big 12 Conference, a defining achievement in his tenure.

With that milestone secured, Holmoe feels it’s the right time for a new leader to take BYU athletics to the next level.
BYU President Shane Reese emphasized the monumental task ahead, calling Holmoe “irreplaceable,” and pledging to find a successor who can navigate the evolving college sports environment, including NIL and the transfer portal. Holmoe, who never signed a multi-year contract during his 23 years at BYU, leaves behind a legacy of resilience and unwavering commitment to the Cougars’ success.
