A healthy dose of humility is needed at all times. The best way to respond to something or someone who proves you wrong is to admit it and roll with the punches. The worst way to react is to persist and bury your head in the sand to avoid facing the obvious. I want Sheryl SwoopesDE to understand this.
Swoopes was an outspoken critic of Caitlin Clark even before she became the first choice. 1 overall in the WNBA draft. The Hall of Famer bristled at the idea that Clark could immediately succeed against the pros. She laughed at the idea that Clark could lead the league in assists.
Well, Clark had a bit of an adjustment period, but now he’s thriving against the pros. Not only did he lead the league in assists, he broke the record for assists in a season. Despite all evidence to the contrary, Swoopes stands his ground. According to Swoopes, Clark is not a dominant force in the WNBA. Seriously, on the Gil’s Arena podcast, Swoopes said of Clark’s 19.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 8.4 assists per game: “Those are incredible numbers, but to me, he’s not dominant.” Listen, it can be hard accept that yes.wrong But Swoopes is wrong here.
As one Twitter user pointed out, Clark’s numbers as a freshman are comparable to or better than any of Swoopes’ three MVP seasons.
Clark isn’t just having a good rookie season. She’s having an incredible season, period. It is absurd to act as if it is not something special.
Swoopes doesn’t need to like Clark. She doesn’t even need to think that she is already one of the best players in the league. But we should at least respect his name.
