Foligno is the first captain since Jonathan Toews, who captained the team from 2008 to 2023.
“In a short amount of time, Nick has quickly earned the respect of his teammates and our staff,” said general manager Kyle Davidson. “Nick’s commanding presence in the locker room was important in helping the team find its identity. He served as a mentor to many of our younger players, both on and off the ice, as they led the leadership group of our veteran players, and we are more than confident that he will thrive in the role of captain as we usher in a new era of Blackhawks hockey.” The 17-year veteran just finished his first season with the Blackhawks scored 37 points in 74 games. He finished the season tied for first on the power play team with eight goals, while he was third on the team with 37 points, fourth with 20 assists and fourth in goals with 17.
Foligno received a contract extension in January. Between that and the captaincy, it’s clear the team thinks highly of Foligno. This is not something Foligno takes lightly.
“The fact that Danny, Kyle, Luke and my teammates have put their faith in me to lead this incredible group is extremely humbling and I thank them all for the opportunity,” said Foligno. “I am very honored to serve as the captain of this historic franchise and its incredible fans, especially at such a crucial time for the team’s future.”
