“BYU Basketball Scores Key Road Win Over UCF, Bolstering NCAA Resume with Fourth Straight Conference Victory”
BYU basketball added another solid road victory to their NCAA Tournament resume, taking down UCF in Orlando in a highly competitive game. The win marks the Cougars’ first four-game conference winning streak in four seasons—a notable achievement considering the challenges of the WCC “Dark Ages.” With back-to-back Quad 1 wins now under their belt, BYU is finally building momentum for a legitimate tournament bid.
BYU vs. UCF: Game Recap
Kevin Young and the Cougars entered UCF’s notoriously tough home court with one goal in mind: keep their winning streak alive. In a game defined by intense defense, BYU kept its composure, shooting 43% from beyond the arc and scoring 81 points— the highest total allowed by UCF since Kansas’ 99-48 blowout earlier this month.
Richie Saunders led the charge with a stellar 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 6 three-pointers. Teammates Gideon George and Maizen Fausett also contributed with a combined 7 triples of their own, helping BYU dominate from deep.
However, not everyone had a standout game. Egor Demin, despite struggling from the perimeter (1-for-3), contributed 6 assists and a crucial 3-pointer in a key moment of the game. His 5 turnovers, though, were a rough spot on an otherwise solid performance.
Kanon Catchings, coming off a career-high game against Baylor, was nearly invisible, failing to score a single point. It was a tough turn of events for the freshman, but he’ll look to bounce back in the next game.
UCF was relentless throughout, keeping the score within striking distance for most of the second half. Despite BYU’s best efforts, the Golden Knights always seemed within reach of pulling off an upset. One area of concern for the Cougars was their free-throw shooting—an underwhelming 57.9% from the line made it harder to put the game out of reach.
Mawot Mag had an excellent all-around game, contributing 5 assists (a career-high) to go along with his 3 three-pointers. His defensive ability continues to be a significant asset, and his all-around performance in this one was crucial.
Keba Keita also had a moment of brilliance with two emphatic blocks in the final 20 seconds, sealing the win and reminding fans of his value as a game-changing defender.
Despite the challenges, the Cougars managed to hold on for another hard-fought win, reaffirming their NCAA tournament hopes. Now, with the Big 12 grind ahead, BYU must continue building on this momentum if they hope to make a deep run.
