Johnston, speaking about the 31-year-old Gibson, who has two years remaining on his $6.4 million-per-year contract, said: “Although Gibson might not be a top priority, he could be a practical choice — particularly in the scenario outlined above where he’s acquired with a $3.2 million cap hit. Edmonton is fully committed to pursuing the Stanley Cup this season and in the coming years while Gibson remains under contract. The veteran would undeniably be an improvement over the Oilers’ current No. 2 option to back up Skinner.”
