Jets Eye Justin Reid to Strengthen Weak Safety Depth and Boost Run Defense

The New York Jets’ safety depth chart is bare, but that could soon change as free agency heats up. ESPN’s Matt Bowen recently linked Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid to the Jets, suggesting he could become a key player under new defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.

Reid, ranked as the fifth-best available safety, has been a standout with 261 tackles, 14 pass breakups, and 3 interceptions over three seasons in Kansas City. The Jets, who struggled last season with tackling and run defense, could benefit from Reid’s physicality and field awareness. With 2 Super Bowl titles and over 580 career tackles, Reid brings both durability and championship pedigree to a team in need of playmakers.

Pro Football Focus projects Reid to secure a three-year, $46.5 million deal, ranking him among the NFL’s top-paid safeties. This would be a critical addition as the Jets overhaul their secondary, losing several free agents in the process. Under Glenn’s new philosophy, bolstering the safety position is a priority, signaling a shift from the team’s previous approach.
