Don Sweeney Reveals Behind-the-Scenes Details of Brad Marchand’s Extension Negotiations

On Sunday, Don Sweeney acknowledged that the Bruins are unlikely to offer contract extensions to most players on their roster before the offseason begins, but he hinted there may be one significant exception.

Don Sweeney Named General Manager of The Bruins

Brad Marchand’s future with Boston has been a hot topic for some time. The Bruins captain is in the final year of the eight-year, $49 million deal he signed in September 2016, putting him at risk of leaving the only NHL team he’s ever known.

However, Sweeney emphasized that keeping Marchand in a Bruins uniform is his “ultimate goal.” The team has maintained communication with the 16-year veteran and his representatives throughout the season.

“We’ve been in negotiations with Brad and communicating with him throughout the year,” Sweeney said in a team video. “Now that the 4 Nations is over, we’ll sit down with Brad and his representatives in the next couple of weeks to have a clearer path for his future.”

While Marchand made it clear at the start of the season that he wasn’t interested in discussing contract matters publicly, it’s likely that the 2006 draft pick is keen on continuing his career in Boston and potentially retiring as a Bruin. For now, though, his primary focus remains on helping the team finish the regular season strong and secure a playoff spot.
