BYU Basketball Clinches Key Quad 1 Road Win at West Virginia, Solidifying NCAA Tournament Bid
BYU basketball left Morgantown with a crucial Quad 1 victory, defeating West Virginia 73-69 in a gritty, back-and-forth contest that further strengthened their NCAA Tournament chances. The win, hailed by college basketball insider Jon Rothstein as a game that “just moved the needle,” was a statement of BYU’s resilience and determination.

The Cougars improved to 16-8 overall and 7-6 in Big 12 play, but more importantly, this victory adds a significant road win to their NCAA Tournament resume. The triumph came as a true team effort, with all ten players contributing, helping BYU snap a three-game losing streak in dramatic fashion.
Head coach Kevin Young called it “the best team win of the year,” praising his players for their unshakable readiness. Bench players like Mihailo Boskovic and Trey Stewart stepped up, with Boskovic delivering the game-winning and-one in the final moments, proving the depth and versatility of the roster.
Though turnovers plagued BYU in the first half, they adjusted in the second, committing only three turnovers and stifling West Virginia’s defense. The Cougars also dominated the glass, outrebounding the Mountaineers 35-25, a stark contrast to their recent struggles on the boards.
Defensively, BYU executed a near-perfect game plan against West Virginia’s star guard, Javon Small, limiting him to just nine points, only the second time all season he’s been held to single digits. The defensive efforts of Mawot Mag and Trey Stewart were pivotal in neutralizing Small’s impact.
BYU also excelled at the free-throw line, hitting 81% (13-of-16), a key factor in sealing the win and ensuring they stayed ahead. This victory showcased BYU’s grit, depth, and focus, and it could prove to be a defining moment as they push toward the NCAA Tournament.
