USD Coyotes Football Team Shows Promise in 2024 Season Despite Tough Competition
The University of South Dakota Coyotes football team wrapped up the 2024 season with mixed results, showing resilience and growth despite facing some of the toughest competition in the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC). The team, led by head coach Bob Nielson, demonstrated a mix of veteran leadership and emerging talent that bodes well for the future of USD football.
The season featured a roller-coaster journey, as the Coyotes notched key victories but struggled in certain high-stakes matchups. Their highlight of the year came in a thrilling upset over a nationally ranked opponent, proving that the Coyotes are capable of competing with the best teams in the FCS.
Key Players Stepping Up
One of the standout players of the season was quarterback Aidan Briar, who continued to show improvement in his second year as the starter. Briar threw for over 2,500 yards, showing off his ability to make critical plays when the team needed it most. In addition, running back Jordan Banks emerged as a reliable offensive weapon, accounting for more than 1,100 rushing yards and seven touchdowns throughout the season.
Defensively, linebacker Max Holden proved to be a key anchor for the Coyotes’ defense, leading the team in tackles and tackles for loss. His leadership and consistency were crucial for USD as they battled through injuries in their defensive backfield.
Playoff Hopes Fall Short
Despite some strong individual performances, the Coyotes’ bid for a playoff spot fell short. A mid-season losing streak and a narrow loss in the final game of the regular season against a fellow MVFC contender left USD with a record just outside the playoff picture. While the team is disappointed not to make the postseason, they are optimistic about the future.
“We showed we can compete at a high level, and that’s something we’ll build on going into the offseason,” said Coach Nielson after the season finale. “We have the right pieces in place, and with some added depth and development, this team will be ready to make a real run next year.”
Looking Ahead to 2025
As the 2024 season ends, the Coyotes are already looking ahead to 2025. With several key players returning, including Briar and Banks, USD has the potential to be a formidable contender in the MVFC. The offseason will be critical as they aim to improve in key areas like pass protection and defensive consistency.
USD fans are excited for the future and hopeful that the Coyotes will make a return to the playoffs in the coming years. The dedication and fight shown throughout 2024 demonstrate that this team is building something special in Vermillion.
