Antti Raanta is a goaltender who has come a long way in the NHL over the past few years, though he has been pretty solid whenever he’s had a chance to score.
Unfortunately, after some time with the Carolina Hurricanes, it looks like Raanta’s time in the NHL is over. He was looking for another job, but the only teams interested were those with injured goalkeepers. Raanta did not want to be a team insurance policy and decided to retire from the NHL, since the AHL was not an option. While he may be done with the NHL, he is not done with professional hockey. According to journalist Simo Frigole, Raanta will look for hockey opportunities throughout Europe. Basically, he wants to play in a top league, in his first division. A minor league system doesn’t interest him.
Raanta finished his career with a 2.48 goals against average and a .915 save percentage. Also, his career record was 139-80-29, which is pretty good all things considered. It could be argued that the 35-year-old deserved better opportunities.
