Despite the specter of scandal that surrounded them for most of last season, the atmosphere was immaculate for the Michigan Wolverines last season.
They entered the 2023 campaign thinking they were one of the best teams in the country, and they proved it game after game en route to a perfect season and a win in the College Football Playoff National Championship – their first of Michigan since a shared championship with Nebraska in 2023. 1997.
Things look a little different in 2024, however, for one, the program is facing increased scrutiny from the NCAA, and a recent announcement of charges could lead to serious consequences. Second, several key figures left for the NFL after the championship, including coach Jim Harbaugh – now the coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. Third, and perhaps most pressing for Michigan, is the fact that the Wolverines were just beaten at home for the first time since the 2019 regular season finale against Ohio State.
It wasn’t just any loss, but more of a loss to the No. 3 Texas Longhorns, who definitely outplayed the Wolverines.
All of this has led to different atmospheres in the building, according to new coach Sherrone Moore. Moore is right that Michigan needs to bounce back, and the Wolverines are lucky that Arkansas State is next on the schedule. But it is not easier later, with the arrival of No. 11 U.S.C.
It’s the new Big Ten, but it’s also the new era of the 12-team CFP, which means the Wolverines can still make the playoffs if they figure out how to get past Texas.
