New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye has his work cut out for him. Starting his rookie season as QB2 behind starting QB Jacoby Brissett, Maye will spend most of the 2024 NFL season developing. Former Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels praised Maye on a recent episode of Edelman’s “Games with Names” podcast.
The former Patriots wide receiver pointed to the rookie’s work as a starting point for a list of ways Drake can improve in his first year.
“He still needs to work on his feet; he’s had a lot of shots where he’s like that, and he’s trying to do that,” Edelman said while moving his body in two different directions. “He will learn that way. I hope so, but this was his modus operandi.”
McDaniels, who became the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022-23 after 18 seasons with the Patriots, pointed to Maye’s lack of experience at quarterback, which translates into pass-rushing problems and weakness under pressure in the pocket .
“I don’t think he’s played much as a center fielder, and it shows. “When it comes to business stuff, it’s usually just assignment time, you know, and I doubt he did that much in college, since what I understand,” McDaniels said. “I think that’s the kind of thing that’s going to take some time to adjust to because you can’t think how to win the ball from the center when you’re dealing with defenses, so the kick comes , and what is my reading, and what covers that they play, you can not understand how to turn the ball. »
