After leading the Detroit Pistons to a stunning first-round playoff comeback from a 3-1 deficit against the Orlando Magic, head coach J.B. Bickerstaff was rewarded with a contract extension. Meanwhile, Orlando’s Jamahl Mosley received devastating news: despite guiding the Magic to the playoffs, he was fired after five seasons—a decision that immediately drew Bickerstaff’s attention.
The two coaches share a close friendship, so the news hit Bickerstaff personally. During the playoff series, they had mutually agreed not to speak, only sharing embraces before and after Game 7.
Speaking on Mad Dog Sports Radio, Bickerstaff defended Mosley, calling Orlando’s decision the “wrong choice.” He pointed to the Magic’s injury struggles, arguing that Mosley shouldn’t be held accountable for factors beyond his control.
“Organizations obviously have the right to make their choices,” Bickerstaff said via SiriusXM (per HoopsHype). “But I feel like this is a wrong choice, to be honest. Jamahl did a heck of a job turning that team from a lottery team into a playoff team year after year. I don’t think there’s been a team whose star players have been injured more than his were.”
“For him to steady the ship and still make the playoffs every year says everything about his coaching ability—building character, developing players, and creating a strong culture and environment,” Bickerstaff continued. “So I know he’ll land another job, and whichever franchise gets him will be better for it.”
Where Mosley ends up remains uncertain, but Bickerstaff and the Pistons now turn their attention to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round.
