National media have been all over Mark Pope this offseason first leaking that other programs are mocking Kentucky’s recruiting, then questioning the game plan. Now, one analyst says Pope’s roster might be among the worst in the SEC.
With just two spots left as May begins, Pope’s rebuild is nearly complete. After high-profile misses like Tyran Stokes to Kansas, this Kentucky team looks far less talented than what fans expect.
Enter Aaron Gershon, who didn’t hold back: “Objectively, on paper, Kentucky has a bottom 5 roster in the SEC right now, and it’s about to be May.” His only hope? Late “stunners” from NBA Draft prospects like Milan Momcilovic or Juke Harris. But banking on May miracles is risky.
When fans argued Pope took a “worse” roster to the Sweet 16 in Year 1, Gershon doubled down: “Disagree. That roster was better.” He listed proven stars like Lamont Butler, Koby Brea, and Jaxson Robinson while noting this new squad has far less proven success.
Sure, basketball isn’t played on paper. This team could gel and surprise everyone. But that’s the real problem: Kentucky shouldn’t be hoping to surprise people just to have a winning season. If Pope’s reduced to playing the plucky underdog because he can’t land elite talent, his tenure in Lexington will be very short.
